The surname Pellio is very rare in Germany, but very common in my home village Ediger-Eller, where we find 18 entries in the telephone book. The name has spread only after the second world war into the neighbourhood. Twenty years ago there were around 40 entries in the all German Telephone list, I knew at least the parents of all of them, all originated from Ediger-Eller, at least in the second generation. A document from the fifteenth century was found in the archive of Trier, where a certain Mr. Pellio sold a piece of land. So the name existed before the invasion of the Spanish in the 17th century and the migration of Italian workers (railway) in the nieteenth century. Most probably an influential inhabitant of Ediger, furrier by profession, changed his name into Latin as many did in the time of humanism. Molitor = miller, Faber = craftsman etc. There is also a small lane named "Pelzerstrasse" in Ediger, which means Peltmongers'Lane, where probably all peltmongers used to live and work together in a trade guild since the middle ages.
