Für Namen wie Sauerbier oder Sauermann treffen diese Ableitung und deren Bedeutungen zu, in Zusammenhang mit dem Partikel wald aber machen sie wenig Sinn. 2. Wahrscheinlicher ist eine Ableitung aus dem mittelhochdeutschen Substantiv sûden, sûnden: Süden. Diese Ableitung wird auch vorzugsweise für die Landschaftsbezeichnung Sauerland verwendet *). 3. Eine andere Möglichkeit ergibt sich aus dem mittelniederdeutschen Adjektiv sôr: dürr, trocken. Die schriftliche Überlieferung dieses Landschaftsnamens beginnt 1266 in Form von Beinamen: Wesselo de Suderlande, Zeuge, 1266 (Westfälisches Urkundenbuch, Staatarchiv Münster), in der Folgezeit öfter z. B. Bertoldi Suderlant, 1. Viertel 14. Jhd. (Das älteste Bürgerbuch der Stadt Soest 1302-1449), ab dem 16.Jhd als Surlant (1523, Kassel), Surland, Surlandia (1552, Werden/Ruhr) und ab dem frühen 17. Jhd. als Sau(e)rland, Sauerlande (1628). Die lautliche Entwicklung zeigt zunächst einen Schwund des innervokalischen d, wie er auch sonst im Westfälischen im 15. Jhd. sicher belegt ist, besonders bei der ländlichen Bevölkerung: Suderland (aus mittelhochdeutsch sûden, Süden, südliches Land) zu Suerland, Surland. Im 16. Jhd. wird die mittelniederdeutsche Schreibweise durch die hochdeutsche ersetzt, dabei wird langes u zu au, z. B. in Ortsnamen: -husen zu -hausen, so auch Su(e)rland zu Sau(e)rland. Der hochdeutsche Name Sauerland, ursprünglich Suderland, bedeutet also nichts anderes als südliches Land. Diese Bezeichnung ist aus der Perspektive der im 11. Jhd. immer bedeutsamer werdenden Städte Dortmund, Soest und Münster zu sehen, für die die Produkte des südlich gelegenen Hinterlandes wie Holz(kohle) und Erz von großer wirtschaftlicher Bedeutung waren.
